Seen off RAF Gan, Indian Ocean in 1959 having completed a RAS - refuelling at sea- by the Royal Navy's Bay-class, anti-aircraft frigate F500 St. Brides Bay. Launched 03/04/1946 by Sir James Laing & Sons Ltd., Deptford, Sunderland, England (767) as "Empire Dunbar" but completed in October 1946 for the Royal Fleet Auxiliary as " Wave Laird", registered at London. Pennant number A119. L X B X D = 493'10" X 64'1" X 28'6". 8,187 g.t. & 11,600 dwt. 2 Water tube boilers producing superheated steam at max. pressure of 490 lb. 2 steam turbines double reduction geared to secondary shaft, manufactured by Metropolitan Vickers Electrical Co., Manchester, producing 6,800 shp to a single screw for 15 knots. Vessel sold by the Secretary of State for Defence to Hierros Ardes, Spanish shipbreakers and left Plymouth in tow on 26/01/1970. After calling at Gibraltar she left there on 25/02/1970 bound for Gandia, Spain arriving prior to 07/03/1970. Regards,Rick |
