This was one of two sister ships, "Santa Paula" and "Santa Rosa" named after the earlier pair (see Santa Paula (1) ) of 9000 tons which, after 26 years, were withdrawn in 1958 as the new vessels entered service. Notable feature for the time was a wide use of new materials in their luxury accomodation, and advanced cargo handling gear. Side doors to Nos. 3 and 4 holds allowed extendible automatic conveyors for palletized cargo.
