SD14 and Freedom 'Liberty Replacement' types have featured here from time to time. Mitsubishi Heavy Industries' design for this market was the MM14. It was not quite as successful as the SD14 or Freedom and only five were ever built. The first two were for Suisse Atlantique and the other three, including the "Nils Amelon" seen here at Lyttelton, for Red Anchor Line of Hong Kong. They may have been a bit too sophisticated (ie, expensive) for their intended market. All were delivered between 1969 & 1973, then in 1977 two much modified vessels with the same hull form wee completed for Silver Line. |
