CAPITAINE BOUGAINVILLE

The burnt out super structure of the CAPITAINE BOUGAINVILLE shows the ferocity of the fire which took hold of the ships engine room and eventually spread through the accommodation on the 2nd Sept, 1975. The ship was only a couple of days out of Auckland bound for Port Moresby via Sydney. The ship was abandoned north of Whangarei. Due to the gale force wind and rough sea 16 passengers and crew lost their lives. The photo was taken while the vessel was lying at Whangarei
