KUPE
KUPE
The KUPE was built in 1971 for the Wellington Harbour Board by the Whangarei Engineering Company NZ. She is seen here last Sunday on her way out to the inner anchorage to assist the log carrier IVS NIGHTINGALE into her berth along Aotea Quay. The KUPE is due to be replaced in April 2008 by a tug currently being built in Vietnam and designed Damen Shipyards, Netherlands. The new vessel which is to be named TIAKI which means to care for, protect or look after in Maori is Mark 2 of the ASD 2411 Class. Unlike the the KUPE which has a Voith Schneider propulsion system the new vessel will have an Azimuthing Stern Drive. The TIAKI will have a bollard pull of 70 tonnes and will also be painted the familiar RED that Wellingtonian's are so used to seeing operating on their harbour.
