City of Hull
City of Hull
Perhaps Ellerman Line's most elegant post WW2 design was that of the City of Hull of Ellerman Hall Line, seen here in Birkenhead. She was one of four in the 'City of London' class which appear to owe their ancestry to the pre-war 'City of Cape Town' design. Despite Ellerman's association with Wilson Line, based in Hull, she was the first in the fleet with this name when delivered in 1947 by Vickers Armstrong. Being steam-turbine powered she could get no tradng buyers when Ellerman finished with her and in 1967 she went to Panamanians, was renamed Essex, and made a loaded voyage to the Far East, discharged, and arrived in Aioi, Japan, on 22 June to be broken up.
