RANGATIRA
The RANGATIRA departing Wellington on one of her daylight passages to Lyttelton. Built by Swan Hunters Walker Shipyard, Newcastle-on-Tyne in 1972 to replace the ill-fated WAHINE. RANGATIRA was 9,387 GRT and was 500 feet long,she had a service speed of 21 knots. Unfortunately by 1974 she was not paying her way and was being heavily subsidized by the Govt, and in 1976 the service came to an end, the public choosing to fly or use the Picton ferries to get to and from the South Island of NZ
