The Beacon Hill Signal Station or Wellington Harbour Radio has been on this site since 1866 when a signalman was stationed there to signal arriving vessels and to communicate their arrival with the shore authorities.Unfortunately for him the only shelter he was given was a barrel. Positioned near the entrance to Wellington harbour and 440 feet above sea level it has a fantastic view of the harbour, south coast and the eastern approaches of Cook Strait. The present building was built in 1883 and in a couple of months construction will begin on a new signal station. |
