There have been a couple of posts about Union SS Company's steamer "Waipori" built by Hawthorne Leslie in 1938. Here she is in Lyttelton in 1961. Apparently she had an Isherwood 'Arcform' hull and with a deadweight of 6100 tons was Union Company's largest trans-Tasman trader for most of her life. Sold in 1965 and renamed "Pacific Mariner" she was broken up in Hong Kong in 1969. Early proponents of the motor ship Union Company built a number of steamers in the late 1930's, perhaps, with war threatening, to take advantage of New Zealand's abundant coal reserves.
