The Port Vindex at Lyttelton. Building as Port Sydney she was taken over by the Admiralty and completed as the aircraft carrier H.M.S. Vindex. After postwar coversion she entered service as Port Vindex in 1949, being the only Port Line ship not named after a port. Konini is in the foreground and the tanker is the Swedish Munkedal. In 1966 the Munkadel was sold to Greek owners who converted her into a passenger ro/ro ferry with capacity for 945 passengers. Renamed Heleanna she caught fire in 1971 with the loss of 25 lives. |
