LUXURY LINER ROW – AUGUST 3, 1965

In probably one of the last meetings of such a prestigious group of true ocean liners on the West Side of New York, here we see "Luxury Liner Row" as it looked 55 years ago today, on August 3, 1965.

From left to right in the photo: the UNITED STATES; the FRANCE; brand new Italian Line sisters, the MICHAELANGELO and the RAFFAELLO; and the classic QUEEN MARY.

The Italian liner RAFFAELLO had just recently arrived on her maiden voyage and was joined by her sister ship, the MICHELANGELO, for their first meeting in New York Harbor. Ten years later, they would both be withdrawn from service. The QUEEN MARY remained in service for only two years after this photo was taken, the UNITED STATES four, while the FRANCE sailed for the French Line until 1974.

A classic moment in maritime history..!
