AMERICA meets UNITED STATES |
Newport News pic of AMERICA passing the yard with UNITED STATES fitting out. AMERICA was completed in 1940 and was similar to the design which was incorporated into UNITED STATES, not surprising as she was also designed by William Gibbs. She served as WEST POINT during WW2 reverting to her old name post- war. Sold in 1964 she became Chandris' AUSTRALIS and entered a fairly chequered period after that eventually becoming AMERICAN STAR and was spectacularly wrecked off the Canary Islands in the mid- 1990s. |
