RANGATIRA

The RANGATIRA berthed at Lyttelton on her maiden voyage to that port. Built in 1972 she was the pride of the Union Steam Ship Co,NZ Ltd. Built to replace the ill-fated WAHINE she unfortunately only lasted on the Wellington - Lyttelton Steamer Express Service until 1976 due to the high cost of operating her and a down turn of passengers and cargo mainly due to the rail ferries and cheaper air fares. She was withdrawn and returned to the UK.
