KAIAPOI

The Union Steam Ship Co, collier KAIAPOI built by Henry Robb Ltd of Leith in 1949, berthed at Greymouth to take on another load of coal for delivery around the coast. The Grey River is in flood and to prevent the ship from being swept away from her berth one of the anchor cables has been run ashore. In bad floods the engine was put slow ahead to hold her up against the flow of the river. These types of conditions were frequent and crews were well practiced in dealing with them.
