WAHINE
Built in 1913 by Wm, Denny & Bros, Dumbarton for the Union Steam Ship Company's Wellington - Lyttelton Steamer Express Service. The WAHINE was a triple screw turbine steamer which had a speed of 20.5 knots and at the time of building she was one of the fastest ships in the world. She was also fitted with a bow rudder to give better manoeuvrablity when going astern into her berths at Wellington and Lyttelton. During WW1 the British Gov, requisitioned the vessel and used her as a mine layer. The vessel served the Union Co until 15 August 1951 when she was wrecked with no loss of life in the Arafura Sea while taking New Zealand troops from Wellington - Kure to take part in the Korean War.
