British pass/cargo liner TAINUI, imo 1024507/ 150m/ 9.957gt/ twin screw/ 14kn/ pax: 40 1st, 75 2nd, 400 3rd classes; 10/1908 completed by Workman Clark & Co., Belfast, for Shaw Savill & Albion Co., Ltd, Southampton; 12/11/1908 maiden voyage to Wellington, NZ: 1913 collided with the INCA, of Pacific Steam NavigatioCo, Liverpool; 1917 requistioned by Shipping Controller, London; 08/04/1918 torpedoed and abandoned. Reboarded and taken 130 miles to Falmouth stern first; 21/09/1921 retrned to the owners and resumed service via the Panama canal; 04/1932 converted to tourist class only; 25/11/1938 final sailing to Wellington, NZ; 03/1939 sold for scrap, meanwhile MoWT acquired her and renamed EMPIRE TRADER, mgrs. Shaw Savill & Albion Co, Ltd, Southampton; 21/02/1942 torpedoed by U-92 but not sunk. Made for port escorted by the corvette HMCS DAUPHIN, sunk by her crew in the next day, when the ship became unmanageable.
