British pass/cargo liner RMS HIGHLAND CHIEFTAIN, imo 1148161/ 166m/ 14.131gt/ twin screw/ 15kn; . pax: 150 1st class, 70 intermediate, 500 3rd class; 20/01/1929 completed by Harland & Wolff, Ltd, Belfast, for Nelson Line, Ltd, Liverpool; 1932 HIGHLAND PATRIOT, Royal Mail Lines, Ltd, London; 1939 ahe commenced wartime trooping duties; 11/10/1940 she was damaged during a bombing raid on Liverpool; 1948 restarted her former River Plate service; 1959 CALPEAN STAR, Calpe Shipping Co., Ltd, Gibraltar, who converted for use in the whaling industry; 03/1960 she suffered rudder damage when off Montevideo, and after leaving under tow she suffered a boiler room explosion which resulted in her being abandoned. The wreck wasn't cut up for scrap until 1965. Seen inbound Leixões 50s. (F. Cabral, Oporto). |
