Afea has just begun her crossing from Isthmia (top right of picture) where the road bridge is submerged into the canal bed. Left side is the canal looking to Corinth.

Connects Gulf of Corinth (at Corinth) to the Gulf of Aegina (at Isthmia).

It is four miles long (saving 200 miles), 70 feet wide and depth 26 feet, cut through solid rock; This was a traditional route to cross between the gulfs before the canal was built, historically ships were manhandled, and some were built in sections to be dismantled, carried and re-assembled on the other side.

It was begun in 1882 by the French and completed by a Greek company in 1893.
