D 24 ft, at full load 11190 T

One of a standard class of ships built in the USA for service during WWI
Many had passenger accommodation added to them in the post war years

This ship was one of fifty "HOG ISLAND TYPE A" freighters built fo the Emergency Fleet Corporation (EFC) since Sep. 1917. following EFC Design # 1022. Her keel was laid on July 18, 1918 as hull # 528 at the New York Shipbuilding Corporation Shipyard located in the so called "Hog Island" at Philadelphia near the Navy Yard.
The ship was the 27th "Hog Islander" and was delivered on June 27, 1919 with the name of "Shaume". At the end of October 1921 the "Shaume" was transferred to the U.S. Navy and was commissioned as a U. S. Navy Cargo Ship on November 30, 1921 bearing the name of U.S.S. PROCYON (AG-11).
On April 1, 1931 the ship was decommissioned and passed over to the "New York State Education Department" to be loaned to the "New York State Maritime Academy" to be used as a cadet training ship, being renamed "Empire State" taking up her new role on July 15, 1931. In June 1941 she underwent a noticeable conversion: she was greatly modernized and given improved accommodation for about 600 cadets. At the same time the ship was renamed "American Pilot".
Just at this time the above picture was taken.
She then started a new phase in her training ship career. In 1942 she was taken over by the War Shipping Administration, still serving as a training ship. During the next five years, until 1947, she went on in her cadet training duties and in conclusion some 2500 cadets, took sea after having been trained on this unique "Hog Islander". In 1946 the War Shipping Administration had again relinquished her control to the New York State Maritime Academy and in 1948 she went to be scrapped at the Wilmington, Delaware scrapyards of American Shipbreakers
