The ship was named after Walter Ulbricht, who was First Secretary of the East German Socialist Unity(communist) Party from 1950 to 1971. In 1992-following the end of the communist era, the ship was renamed PRIOZERSK (in keeping with the ’P’ names of most of the other 15 “Mercators” in the Russian fleet).
