SS Oltenia II (+1943)

Oltenia II SS was built as Romanian Oltenia for Steaua Romana SA Pentru Industria Petroleului, Bucharest. 1941 seized by Britain and renamed Oltenia II by the Ministry of War Transport (MoWT). She was a Steam Tanker of 6,394 tons built in 1928 by W.G. Armstrong, Whitworth & Co Ltd, Walker, Newcastle-upon-Tyne. On the 8th january 1943 when on route from TRINIDAD for GIBRALTAR in CONVOY TM-1 carrying a cargo of 9,086 tons of Admiralty furnace oil, a consignment of 732 barrels of lubricating oil, 1,000 sten guns and 500,000 rounds of ammunition and tobacco she was torpedoed by German submarine U-436 and sunk by gunfire.

The master, 13 crew members and three gunners from the Oltenia II (Master Arthur Laddle) were lost. 42 crew members and one gunner were picked up by HMS Havelock (H 88) (C dr R.C. Boyle, DSC) and landed at Gibraltar.
