British Sailor
British Sailor
One of six 'supertankers' ordered by the company in 1951 of which John Brown & Co. built two, the Sailor and the Soldier. As John says she was the company's flag ship when completed and Commadore H.I.McMichael showed Her Majesty the Queen over the ship shortly after her completion in April 1953. Built by John Brown, Yard No 677,Tonnage: 33,738 DWT. LOA 664' 9", Breadth 85' 10", Max. Draught: 36' 5". Powered by 2 Steam turbines geared to a single shaft 13,750shp @ 105 rpm. Service Speed 14.75 knots. Engines by Builder. Tanks 10C, 20W, single pumproom with 3 horizontal duplex pumps, max. discharge rate 2,550 t.w./hr. Victor Pyrate tank cleaning equipment. She had a pretty long life for a crude carrier and one not wholly without incident. She was heavily damaged on the 5th November 1965 in Suez Roads being in collision with the 34,545 DWT tanker Fina France. The British Sailor was bound from Wilhelmshaven to Mina in ballast at the time of the accident and she had a hole 24' in length ripped in her starboard side. She was fitted with a temporary patch in Suez and made her way back to the Mediterranean for dry dock repairs. On the 27.03.1972 she was sold to Marisira Nav. Co. Ltd, Cyprus, and renamed Marisira. In 1974 she was sold again, this time to the Egyptian General Petroleum Organisation, Egypt, and renamed Fagr. On the 5th March 1980 she left Piraeus in tow for scrapping at Kaoshiung, having been laid up at Piraeus for some time. 27 years afloat was pretty unusual for BP's ships of this era or most others come to that.
