British Empress

was only the second pure tanker built for the British Tanker Company. Completed by Swan Hunter & Wigham, Richardson Ltd,.Wallsend, (Yard No. 998), for the BTC on 5.5.1917. 10,738 DWT, 430.1' LOA, Breadth 33.1'. Powered by a triple expansion engine manufactured by the builders developing 3,100 hp. Initially the ship traded solely with the U.S.A. which was then the worlds premier oil producer. She commenced her first voyage to Philadelphia on May the 20th, arriving on the 10th June, and then sailed to Norfolk, Virginia, arriving on the 25th. She berthed with her first cargo in London on the 15th July. This was to set the pattern for her early years although later she would also trade to the Persian Gulf. She came to no harm in those last stages of WWI and continued to ply the seas until 1936 when she was sold to Van Haygen Freres for °£11,250 for demolition in Ghent. She was deliverd to Falmouth on 31.12.1936 and handed over to her new owners for her final voyage.
