Jan Van Nassau

USS Jan van Nassau 1918-1918. Originally, and later, S.S. Jan van Nassau (1913) Jan van Nassau, a 3330 gross ton (7560 tons displacement) cargo ship, was built at Port Glasgow, Scotland, in 1913 for the Royal West Indies Mail Co. of the Netherlands. She was at San Juan, Puerto Rico, on 20 March 1918 when the President ordered the seizure of Dutch merchant ships, and the Navy immediately took her over and commissioned her as USS Jan van Nassau (ID # 2805). The ship was ordered to proceed to the Canal Zone to discharge her original cargo and then steam to Iquique, Chile, to load a cargo of nitrate. She departed Iquique in late April 1918 and delivered the nitrate at New York in May. On 17 May 1918 USS Jan van Nassau was decommissioned at New York and delivered to the U.S. Shipping Board for eventual return to her Dutch owners. She remained in Dutch merchant service until 1928 when she became the Chilean Concepcion. On 30 January 1929 she was sunk in a collision at Valparaiso, Chile.
