Norwegian pass/cargo vessel VENUS, imo 5378309/ 126,5m/ 5.407gt/ 1,760dwt/ steel hulk/ 2x10cyl. 4tev Burmeiter & Wain 9.000bhp/ 19,5kn. She was the world?s fastest passenger vessel at their time; 19/05/1931 completed by Helsingors Jernskibs & Maskinbyggeri, Helsingor, Denmark, for Det Bergenske D/S, Bergen Line, Bergen, for its pass/cargo service Bergen/Stavanger/Newcastle service, together with company?s JUPITER, which on the 05/1938 replaced in the route by VEGA; 21/01/1937 VENUS was en route to Newcastle in a storm when an SOS was heard from the Norwegian steamer TRYM, which was en route Kirkenes, Norway to Middleborough, and saved all crew with much difficulty; 09/1939, outbreak of the WW2 she was laid up at Osterfjorden, Norway, and were still there when Norway was invaded on 09/04/1940. Requisitioned by the ?Kriegsmarine? she was used in the Baltic Sea under the German flag; 16/10/1940 returned to owners but requisitioned again on 08/05/1941, rebuilt by Neptunwerft, Rostock, Germany, interior removed. Used as target vessel for 26TH U-boot flotilla, Pillau, Germany. 20/03/1945 she was bombed and sunk in shallow waters by Allied aircraft at Hamburg; 05/1945 returned to owner?s, raised, repaired by her Danish builders having arrived there in tow on 29/09/1945; new displacement 6.269gt/1.760dwt; 12/05/1948 resumed her original North Sea service with accommodation for 425 passengers. Also made winter cruises to Madeira and Tenerife, where she was very popular; 24/03/1955 having run aground off Plymouth, but some days later refloated; 10/1968 she was withdrawn from service and sold to Shipbreaking Industries, Faslane, arriving there 19/10/1968 for breaking up.
