E' stata varata nel giugno 1969 come portacontainer con il nome Axel Johnson per la Johnson Line. Nel 1987 e' stata convertita in nave da crociera e ribattezzata Regent Sun; nel 1988 e' stata ribattezzata Italia e nel 1990 e' stata acquistata da Costa Crociere che, dopo averla sottoposta a un totale e radicale riammodernamento, l'ha ribattezzata Costa Marina.
