British pass/cargo liner RANGITATA, imo 1149564/ 168,5m/ 16.737gt/ twin screws/ 16kn/ 580pax; 19/10/1929 completed by John Brown & co., Ltd., Clydebank, Glasgow, for Federal Steam Navigation Co., Ltd., Plymouth, however operated by New Zealand Shipping Co., Ltd, London, between London and Wellington via Panama Canal; 1937 RANGITATA, transferred to New Zealand Shipping Cp., Ltd, London; 28/08/1940
During World War II, 28/08/1940 RANGITATA sailed from Liverpool with 113 evacuated children under the Children?s Overseas Reception Board, CORB scheme bound for New Zealand through the Panama Canal in convoy OB-205, with dutch liner VOLENDAM carrying children bound for Canada, which was torpedoed, however RANGITATA transporting 113 CORB children arriving safely in New Zealand.
01/1940 she also operated as a troopship, for example in convoy US1 taking New Zealand troops to the Middle East. 1949 she had returned to civilian service.
1940 BANG, NV Holland, NDL: 21/07/1962 arrived Spilt for breaking up.
