BUTE
BUTE
Built in 1954 by Ailsa shipbuilding in Troon along with her sister COWAL. Third member of the trio ARRAN was built by Denny of Dumbarton ( she was acually the first one to be built )
Owned by the Caledonian Steam Packet Company which basically belonged to British Railways and only just escaped becoming part of Sealink.
Worse than that though the Company became part of the Scottish Transport Group in 1969 and eventually took over MacBraynes services in 1973 becoming Caledonian MacBrayne Ltd.
Bute worked almost exclusively on the Wemyss Bay to Rothesay run for which she was built although she would have appeared on the Dunoon, Millport and Arran runs at some points in her life.
She even had a few stints as the Mallaig / Armadale and Oban / Mull ferry late in her career.
Built with Sampson posts and a derrick aft she was originally only designed for 28 cars but the cargo space aft was plated over in 1959 and the main mast fitted as in your photo. this allowed her to carry many more cars.
Bute was withdrawn from Cal-Mac service in 1978 I think, and finished her days in the Med. although we believe she was scrapped without ever having returned to service.
