On September 30th, 1943, while in convoy from the Laptev Sea to Enisej River with machinery for the Norilsk plant, ARCHANGELSK was torpedoed and sunk by the German submarine U-960, 40 miles west from Russkij Island. The ARCHANGELSK broke in two pieces and sank in 5 minutes. 15 crew were drowned and 2 died later from injuries. |
