The Russian cargo ship ARCHANGELSK was built in 1929 by Burntisland Shipbuilding Company Ltd. as the USKVALLEY and owned at the time of her loss by SGMP (U.S.S.R.).

On September 30th, 1943, while in convoy from the Laptev Sea to Enisej River with machinery for the Norilsk plant, ARCHANGELSK was torpedoed and sunk by the German submarine U-960, 40 miles west from Russkij Island. The ARCHANGELSK broke in two pieces and sank in 5 minutes. 15 crew were drowned and 2 died later from injuries.
