MOBIL VIGILANT
MOBIL VIGILANT
LOA 735 '; Beam 104 ' 5 "; Draught 39 '; 50,285 SDWT
Built 1964 by Bremer Vulkan, Bremen, Germany, powered by a Brown Boveri turbine developing 18,000HP.
While loading at Bandur Mashar, Iran, on 8 June 1965, the tanker luisa on an adjacent berth suffered an
explosion which caused minor damage to the Mobil Vigilant. The moorings were cut and the vessel was
able to reach safety.
Collided with and sank the sulphur carrier Marine Duval in the Neches River, Texas, in January 1979.
During repairs, the bulbous bow was removed and not replaced.
After trading internationally for 10 years, the vessel began lightering VLCCs in the Gulf of Mexico and was
remeasured for that purpose to 44,995 SDWT in 1978. She was sister ship to Egmont, Mobil Valiant, Mobil
Vanguard and Tasso. Owned by Mobil Tankers Company (Liberia) Limited, she was sold for further
trading in September 1982 and renamed Vigil. Scrapped in 1984. (Auke Visser's MOBIL Tankers & Tugs Site)
