SYDNEY
Achille Lauro's passenger liner SYDNEY was photographed at Port Said southbound in June 1966 by the late Geoffrey Wilson, a radio officer on B.P. tankers. She had been under repair at Genoa from 14 April 1966 and was laid up at the port from 18 September 1966.

She had been launched on 4th April 1942 as U.S.S. Croatan (C3-S-A2 type) and but was delivered to Great Britain on 20 February 1943 as the aircraft carrier H.M.S. Fencer.

She was bought by Lauro in 1950 and converted into a passenger ship for employment on the Europe-Australia route.

After her sister Roma?ex-H.M.S. Atheling, formerly U.S.S. Glacier ?was scrapped in 1967, Sydney was renamed Roma, which is confusing as the ships were almost identical (just a few portholes on the sides differed).

Sold to Greece in 1971, in 1973 she was renamed Caribia 2 and was broken up at La Spezia, work starting in September 1975.
