British pass/cargo liner RMS ANSELM (3), imo 1169275/ 130m/ 5.954gt/ single screw/ 14kn/ crew 80/ passengers: 40 - 1st class; 106 - 3rd class; 17/02/1935 completed by William Denny & Sons, Ltd., Dumbarton, for Booth Steamship Co., Ltd., Booth Line, Liverpool; 1940 requisitioned by Government she was converted to a troopship for up to 500 troops; 23/12/1940 while part of convoy WS.5Adue was attacked by German cruiser ADMIRAL HIPPER which was driven off by the escorting cruisers; 05/07/1941 while on passage Gorouck/ Freetown, she was torpedoed by U-96 around 300 miles off the Azores and sunk. 94 crew, 3 gunners and 960 troops were rescued by armed merchant cruiser CATHY and the CHALLENGER. The RMS ANSELM sank vertically with loss of 4 crews and about 250 troops.
