The Blue Star Line was a British passenger and cargo shipping company formed in 1911. Blue Star Line purchased the Booth Line in 1946. Blue Star Line was bought by P&O Nedlloyd in 1998. P&O Nedlloyd was bought by AP Moller Maersk Group in 2005

In 1946 the Booth Line was sold to the Vestey Group of companies and in 1975 all the group's ships were pooled under Blue Star Ship Management Ltd and the Booth Line ceased to exist as a seperate entity.

Nedlloyd was a Dutch shipping company, formed in 1970 as the Nederlandsche Scheepvaart Unie (NSU) in a merger of several shipping lines: Stoomvaart Maatschappij Nederland (SMN) Koninklijke Rotterdamsche Lloyd (KRL) Koninklijke Java-China-Paketvaart-Lijnen (KJCPL) Vereenigde Nederlandsche Scheepvaartmaatschappij (VNS) In 1977 NSU changed its name to Koninklijke Nedlloyd Groep N.V. ("Royal Nedlloyd Group"), and in 1981 the Koninklijke Nederlandsche Stoomboot-Maatschappij (KNSM) merged into the group. Nedlloyd itself later merged with P&O to become P&O Nedlloyd, now a part of Maersk.

On the 1st January 1987 the name OCL ceased to exist, the operation becoming known as P&O Containers Ltd (P&OCL). In 1996 P&O Containers merged with Nedlloyd to form P&O Nedlloyd. August 2005 saw the completion of a buyout of P&O Nedlloyd by the A.P. Moller-Maersk Group and in February 2006 the name Maersk Line was adopted for the combined fleets.

The company was formed by merging P&O Containers Limited (formerly OCL) and Nedlloyd Lines. Expanding in 1998, the line purchased Blue Star Line's container business. The company also acquired the container business of Harrison Line (based in the UK). Further expansion came with the buyout of Farrell Lines (US-based) in 2000.
