Marine Atlantic
Marine Atlantic Inc. is a federal Crown corporation that reports to Parliament through the Minister of Transport. The Corporation provides a constitutionally mandated passenger and commercial marine transportation system between the Island of Newfoundland and the Province of Nova Scotia.

Marine Atlanticís mission is to provide a safe, environmentally responsible, and quality ferry service between the Island of Newfoundland and the Province of Nova Scotia in a reliable, courteous and cost-effective manner.

To that end, the Corporation provides ferry services on two routes. The first is a year-round 96 nautical mile daily ferry service between Port aux Basques, Newfoundland and Labrador and North Sydney, Nova Scotia. The second is a 280 nautical mile tri-weekly ferry service between Argentia, Newfoundland and Labrador and North Sydney, Nova Scotia. This service operates from mid-June until late September.

The Corporation owns and operates four ice-class vessels to meet the traffic offering on these routes. Its three passenger vessels include the MV Leif Ericson, with a capacity to carry 500 passengers and 300 passenger vehicles, and Canadaís two largest ferries namely the MV Caribou and the MV Joseph and Clara Smallwood. Each of these larger vessels has a capacity of 1,200 passengers and approximately 350 passenger vehicles. The MV Atlantic Freighter is a dedicated commercial freighter that primarily carries drop trailers and restricted commodities, to a capacity of approximately 80 drop trailers.

Marine Atlantic owns and operates terminals located in the ports of Port aux Basques, Newfoundland and Labrador, Argentia, Newfoundland and Labrador and North Sydney, Nova Scotia. The Corporationís head office is located in St. Johnís, Newfoundland and Labrador. Employment levels within the Corporation peak at approximately 1,208 persons during the busy summer season.

CARIBOU

MV Caribou was built by Versatile Davie Shipyard in Lauzon, Quebec and delivered in 1986. She is a roll on/roll off ferry designed to carry passengers and vehicles. The MV Caribou was built especially for the Marine Atlantic ferry service between Port aux Basques, Newfoundland and Labrador and North Sydney, Nova Scotia, a distance of 96 nautical miles.

MV Joseph and Clara Smallwood was built by MIL Davie Shipyard in Lauzon, Quebec and entered the Gulf service in 1990. She is a roll on/roll off ferry designed to carry passengers and vehicles. She has been assigned to the 280-nautical mile Argentia, Newfoundland and Labrador to North Sydney, Nova Scotia route, while also providing service on the Port aux Basques route with her sister ship, MV Caribou.

MV Leif Ericson was built in Fosen, Norway in 1991 and was purchased by Marine Atlantic in 2001, to operate between Port aux Basques, N. L. and North Sydney, N. S. The MV Leif Ericson is a roll on/roll off ferry designed to carry passengers and vehicles

ATLANTIC FREIGHTER

MV Atlantic Freighter was built by the Hyundai Shipbuilding Company Limited in 1978 and was purchased by Marine Atlantic from Stena Line and entered service in April 1986. The vessel loads from the stern, has two high-headroom decks and double-level loading / unloading. It has an economical speed of 18 knots.
